Surnames: Caines
I am the granddaughter of a Charlie Caines from St.John's Newfoundland. I have been told that his name was originally Kains or some other variation of Caines. He was an orphan who found himself on ships and landed near Corner Brook where he married Amelia Janes. Would love to have information of his early life, very obscure info at this point.

Hi Tara,

My name is Charlie Caines, unfortunately not the one you seek. I doubt that I be of help, but I'll offer you some information that may limit your search. There is only one family of Caines actually from St. John's, of which I belong. All other Caines' are from the southwest coast and, yes, the Corner Brook and Bay St. George area. These Caines' are unrelated to the St. John's Caines'.

My father was also a Charles Caines. He's dead now, but would be 82 had he lived. To my knowledge there were no other St. John's Caines' named Charlie nor were there Charlie Caines' from Caines families whose roots were not in St. John's. This last point is conjecture. I've never heard of another Charlie Caines nor did my father ever mention another one.

Anyway, I hope you've had luck with your search and this message is merely idle drivel. If not, my instincts tell me that you should not be looking in St. John's, but on the west coast of Newfoundland where Caines is still a relatively common name. In particular, Port aux Choix, Corner Brook, Stephenville, Port au Port, and La Poile are towns where reside folks with the same surname as myself.

Best of luck,
Charlie Caines
