My name is Kathy (Catron) Ehrman, and I grew up in Indiana where just about all my relatives still live. I've been trying to trace my line of the Catrons back as far as I can, and made it to Hans Jacob Kettenring who was born around 1568 in Landstuhl, Germany. This appears to be the SAME Hans Jacob Kettenring you mention in your message.
Your message stated that Hans Jacob was a Bergermeister in Landstuhl, which is MUCH more information that I could previously get. Thank you for that!
Another little bit of information, that you may not know, I got from my Grandpa years ago. The name Kettenring was given to "our people" by the king of Germany. Our ancestors were black smiths and made the strongest chains the king had ever seen. Because the links of these chains were twisted, they lasted longer and could take on a heavier load than other chains. According to my Grandpa, these chains were used to help the King clear the Black Forrest. We were given a family crest and the name KETTENRING. I can get a copy of that crest for you if you would like one. It shows the chain across the bottom.
I believe my line of the Kettenring/Catrons went from Virginia to Tennessee and then to Indiana.
Thanks again for the additional information. If you'd like to e-mail me directly, my address is firstname.lastname@example.org
. And, yes, I married another German! :)
