My name is Freddie Barbosa and I am 32 years old. I have been trying to find out our family history for years. Some sites trace our roots to Portugal, some to Spain. I have 4 brothers. Nathaniel Barbosa Jr. the oldest then George Barbosa, and Daniel Barbosa and then me Freddie Barbosa and finally Robert Anthony Barbosa. I also have a Sister Amanda Louis Barbosa. My Fathers name is Nathaniel Barbosa and my mothers name is Elsa Barbosa (Caroballo Spelling?) I think that my father is from Gudabo. If I spelled that right and my mother is from Vega Baja?? I think. I can't remember what my Grandfather's name was. He past away when I was very young and I barely remember him although I know he was a wonderful man. Please help me if you can. thank you.

I've been told that my brothers and I do not have filipino features. Other than that I do not know where my relatives are since records were lost during World War II. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Barbosa is a Portugese/Spanish name. My family tree with Barbosa is from Puerto Rico. The surname Barbosa is derived from the place-name Barbosa which is the name of a place located near Porta (portugal). It is beleaved that the progenitor of the Barbosa family was one Sanchez Nunes de Barbosa, who was lord of the Barbosa estate from which he took the name. He was the son of Count Nuna de Cellanova and brother of Count Gomes Nunes de Pombeira. It is said that the Barbosa Family is one of the most ancient and nobel of Portugal and, indeed, members have married into the Portugese royal family. Manuel de Sousa de Silva wrote the following vereses celebrating the antiquity nad nobility of the family: Em Penefiel Barbosa, D'esta geracan sadida, E a casa conhyecida, No tempo antiga famosa, No presente Descahida. The following are listed as Members of the Military Order of Carlos III: Pedro Barbosa Arauja, Pedro Juan Barbosa y Barreiros Lus Barbosa y Vandercreft.
You will find the surname throughout Latin America and the Carribean. In Puerto Rico a Barbosa lead the revolt for independence from Spain in Lares and the revolt is know as "El Greto de Lares".
I hope this information is helpfull.

Hello Freddie!

I am not sure if you remember me but I knew you when you lived in Ft Leonard Wood/Waynesville Missouri. I am 3 years older than you (same class with Daniel). Barb Leitgeb was my best friend (remember her) and I knew all of your family. I am racking my brain trying to remember anything I may have been told at the time regarding background, etc. and I will post again if I can think of anything. In the meanwhile, feel free to email me directly at just to say "hi" or something. Take care! Kim

Gisabel, My name is Lisa Barboza. Orginal spelling Barbosa. My grandfather was Avelino Barbosa from Jao Fogo, Cape Verde Islands. He and many other members of his family came and settled in the US during the great Cape Verdean migration in the early 1900s. I know that he had a brother called Harry whose wife was named Lillian. My grandmother also is from Cabo Verde but her family is from Brava. Her name was virginia oliviera do sena. My grandfather's family was mulatto, and my grandmother family were "jumbabs- continetals who had a plantation in Brava. I know much of the history of my grandmother's family, but the Barbosa side is very complex. Would love any info. My grandfahter was born on October 28, 189? and died in Pawtucket RI in 1972. He and my grandfather had 6 children: Eddy, Maria (Daisy), Agnes, Arthur (Joseph), Beatrice, and Elsie. I would love to have any info you could offer, I also can share what knowledge I have of this branch of the family. Email me at
