I am here in morristown nj and I am a descendant of the Searing family. They were a very prominent family here and were prominent even before the Revolution. In my geneological study the tie in to Searings in Long Island and Connecticut is science. Tons of material! Please e-mail me. best regards, John Seibel

I am a descendant of Amos Searing and his 2nd (at least) wife Hannah Ferris, of Hillsdale, Columbia Co NY. She lived in Durham in Greene Co NY after his death in 1808 (she is there in the 1810 census) and their son Amos lived there until his death in 1869.

Although I don't have concrete proof yet, I believe Hannah may be daughter of Timothy Ferris and Ruth Hubbard. They had another daughter, Ruth, who was m. to William Jordan. He was appointed a trustee of Amos Searing's estate, and I believe he was brother-in-law of Amos, Sr. through this Ferris connection. Ferris genealogies are not clear on Hannah's parents, but church records and some legal documents clearly point to some kind of close connection. Also, Hannah Ferris' brother Israel was a near neighbor to Amos in Hillsdale.

My last ancestor named Searing was the daughter of Amos and Hannah, Sally (perhaps Sarah Matilda, or Matilda Sarah - as she is called "Tilly" in the Searing family bible). Sally m. Ira Huse and they removed to OH in the 1830's.

I have identified three daughters of Amos Sr. by his first wife (whose name I don't know) - Ruth (m. Henry Wiltse), Elizabeth (m. John Cleveland), and Phebe. He had at least five children by Hannah Ferris but only one living son, who inherited the estate when still a child. Martin Van Buren's signature appears on the will of Amos "Serrin", as surrogate of the court.

Circumstantial evidence seems to point to this Amos as the son of Micah and Elizabeth (Carle) of Hempstead, LI, NY, mentioned in the will of both his grandfathers. Amos' sister, Elizabeth Searing Hicks, lived nearby in Hillsdale. Do you have any information to confirm or disprove this connection to Micah, or additional information about the Searing and Carle ancestors? Do you know when or how Micah Searing died?

In the 1790 census of Hillsdale, Amos' name is "Sesrin" in the index, but reads "Serrin" in the actual census, and that is how his daughter Sarah's name was spelled by her descendants. The name is also spelled Serring and Saring in some census records and land transactions.

Amos was a wealthy landowner in Hillsdale and in Durham, and is buried in Krum Cemetery. His wife Hannah died in 1841 and is buried in Stonebridge Cemetery in Durham, Greene Co NY.

Would very much appreciate additional information about Amos Searing's first wife and his ancestors, if available.

Thank you. Judy Davison
