Do you know anything about Sarah McGonigle parents, sibblings, dob, places, etc and likewise for Peter Doherty.

I have both names in my family and I'm particularly interested in learning who my Rose McGoingle's parents and sibblings were. She married Neil O'donnell(dob 1871 Co Donegal) son of James O'Donnell and Susan White Doherty.
They married in Boston MA. Think Neal died around 1914(quite young)

Thank you and good luck!!

Barb

Stewart / O'Doherty Connection?

My name is Matt Stewart and I've been waiting for my 67 Marker DNA results to come back before posting this. I am kit number 220399 on Family Tree DNA. My Haplogroup is R1b1a2a1a1b4b or R-M222…which I’ve learned is not very common for Stewart’s apparently. I only match two other Stewart’s at 67 markers at this time.

My last known relative with 100% certainty is Charles Stewart born around 1810 in Virginia or Kentucky. One record shows that he was born in Ohio but I now think this is pretty unlikely. He was married to Eleanor “Nellie” Ellingsworth born 1810 in Kentucky. They both ended up in Greene County, Indiana. It appears that Charles died or was at least out of the picture before 1850. He does not show up in any census records after 1840 and Nellie remarried to a David Stuckey and moved to Smith, IN at the age of 35. We did find a death certificate for a Charles Stewart who died in Greene County, IN in 1882 at the age of 66 but we haven’t been able to prove that this is the same Charles Stewart…although it is likely that it might be. It has been suggested that he might have left his wife and children to move to California during the Gold Rush which is possible, but that is all just speculation at this point.

Thanks to DNA I was connected to two other Stewart’s whose last known relative is James Stewart born Feb 27, 1772 in Virginia. He married Sarah “Sally” Fleshman born in 1778 in Virginia. Both died in Greene County, IN. We now believe that James was Charles’ uncle, and that Charles’ father and James were probably brothers. It also appears that Charles had an older brother named Alexander born around 1797 and possibly another brother named William. Our Stewart’s all seem to have migrated from Virginia to Kentucky to Indiana. My great great grandfather, John Riley Stewart, was born in Worthington, Indiana in 1847 and died there in 1928. Nothing is known about his father Charles’ parents, but it does appear that he followed an old common naming scheme when naming his children because we know their names and also the names of his wife Eleanor’s parents. If this is true his father’s name would likely be John and his mother’s name would be Maria, or a variation of Maria like Mary, or Polly. His children’s names were John, Bartholomew, Maria, Nancy, Solomon, and David. Another clue that we recently found was that a Robert Stewart signed and paid for Alexander’s marriage bond when he was married in Casey County, Kentucky in 1818…but we haven’t been able to find out anything about him. Nothing is known about James’ parents either and several people have been researching him for over 70 years.

My family has always known that we were Irish and Scottish, but that is all they know. DNA has linked us to “Niall of the Nine Hostages” but I don’t know much about this yet. I would love to know where in Ireland or Scotland we came from exactly, but there just aren’t very many records available. The records that are available are a real mess and several contradict each other.

The main reason I'm posting this here is because we match several Dawdy’s, Daugherty’s, and Doherty’s. One of these people I match at 67 markers with only 3 markers off. Several of these people list their last known relative as Howell Dawdy born in 1746. It is believed that he was born in Ireland and that he was an Irish indentured servant when he came to the US. Most of the DNA experts I’ve talked to about this seem to think there is a connection with the O'Doherty's, but that our common ancestor might have been back in the 1600’s or earlier.

If anyone has any information that might help me it would be GREATLY appreciated. It appears that all paper trails are dead ends at this point. I’m really hoping that some unknown relative in Ireland or Scotland will someday take a DNA test and help us learn more about this.

Thank you!

Matt Stewart
Stewart194@hotmail.com

Researching my family history brought me instead to this free .pdf of George Doherty's 1833 Will in the Tenn. Genealogical Society 1989 issue of "Ansearchin," see page 58. I believe it relates to your direct ancestor & contains several family members' names. See also URL LINK: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:-fKqS426SQAJ:....

There are several descendents on public trees in Ancestry.com who have located George (listed as Captain George Doherty) and wives Priscilla Goforth and a Sally.
Re: doherty, john

Hi Julie,
I believe we are related. I have a rough copy of a family history from Peter Somers. My grandfather John had a brother named Patrick born 10 MAY 1880. Peter lists 3 sons Daniel, Patrick and John (DOB 1928 ). He does not have any other dates. He lists Patrick's wife last name only: Brosnahan. He does not have spouse names for the sons or their children.
He had information for Patrick and John's sister Mary. She came to America and married a Chicago police officer named Matthew Hayes. He also indicated that the eldest sister Johanna (DOB 1874) came to America but I am having a tough time finding anything for her. I think I found another sister that he does not have listed. Her name was Anne and she was born in 1876 to John Doherty and Ellen Doherty Moloney ( I think they transposed the maiden and surname).
I am wondering if you might have any additional information that you are willing to share with me. I am having a tough time finding information for the Doherty family. I tried to contact Padaraig Somers a few days ago with a question but have not received a reply yet. Maybe you can answer a few questions I have. How common was the name Doherty in County Limerick in the 1800's? Also what towns or villages would I be most likly to find them?

Thank you for your time!!

Cathy

Seeking any information on William O'Doherty, son of James, who was born of Irish parentage, presumably in Canada, between 1862 and 1867. He was a brakeman for the railroad, and later lived in Missouri and Massachusetts, where he was killed in an accident in 1904. He married, as her second husband, Ellen "Nellie" Spence, a widow, about 1893, presumably in Ontario. Ellen was the daughter of William and Ellen (Heslend) Spence, both born in Scotland. William and Ellen O'Doherty had several children born in Ontario, James E. about 1893, Teresa "Tessie" Sept. 7, 1895, and Charles. Ellen (Heslend) Spence and many of her children lived and died in the Maynard, Mass. area.

My Susan was born in 1845 in Co Donegal, and other than her marriage in 1865/66, to James O'Donnell, and her childrens names etc, thats all I've learned about her. We think her fathers name may have been John but not sure.

I don't know if any went to Scotland at this point either.
Anything is possible, keeping an open mind and all options open.

Barbara

John and Hannah Doherty had only one child in Scotland and that was their eldest, Hugh..

I know that John Doherty died in North Dakota in 1906 and in his obituary is mention of two sisters: Margaret Doherty and Bridget Doherty (possibly married to Gallagher)..

Hannah O'Donnell is the maiden name of Hannah Doherty and she had an older sister, Bridget who accompanied them to America. She never married but was the first school teacher at the school in Leeds North Dakota.

I also got John and Hannah's marriage record from another cousin that lists the names of their parents (unfortunatly not Hannah's mother, she's listed as unknown, I believe). You are welcome to contact me at my outside email address and if interested, I also have quite a few photos..Hannah especially. raye102@hotmail.com

Barbara,

Thank you for getting in touch. There are several things our trees have in common.

Not sure when Elizabeth got here. She was born in Belfast in 1863. Her parents were Cornelius (born about 1837 in Atrium, Ireland) and Mary Ann Daly (born about 1838 near Glasgow, Scotland). She had many siblings. One was Bridget who was born on February 1, 1873 in Belfast). The other girls I found were Matilda and Catherine. She had brothers Bernard and Daniel.

I wonder if there is a connection.

What else do you know about Elizabeth Dohertys family?
Who were her parents, sibblings and where in Ireland did they come from?

I have many Doherty's that came from Ireland and settled in the Boston area. In fact I have an Elizabeth Doherty dob 18560. My elizabeth had two sisters Bridget Feb 1861, and Mary I think. Her parents were Neil Doherty1838-1878, and Mary Coats1838-1878. They both died in Boston 1878, but seperately I think. Bridget married John F O'Donnell in Jan 1881, in Co Donegal and immigrated to MA, settling first in Stoneham, later Boston's North End. They were my grandmothers cousin on both sides I think but at least one
Doherty/O'Donnell. My grandmother was Mary Ann O'onnell dob 1873,
Elizabeth and her family were in Co Cork, but not sure if they were all born there or not.

Barbara

Dear Larry
My family tree under user profile ShaynevanRensburg shows Agnes Grace Daugherty born abt 1870 in Tipperary. Her Great-granddaughter tells me that she emigrated to Indian with her parents (names?) who were Missionaries. She married George David Boyd, a fuel inspector on the East Indian Railway at Sahibganj near Bhagalpur in Bengal.
After her husband died in abt 1925/6 in Burma, we think, Agnes came back to India with her daughter Dorothy Mavis Boyd b Ywa Tung, St Cecilia's Church, Sagaing, Mandalay 1908, and they lived with relatives. Agnes finally died in about 1950 in a Methodist Home for the Families of Missionaries.
Any possible information you might be able to provide regarding her parents and her ancestry prior to the facts stated above would be amazing!! Good luck with your quest and thank you, too. Kind regards Shayne van Rensburg (Mrs) Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

Hi, Barbara,
We meet again! It seems an incredible coincidence, but my aunt is certain our Lumber King was in Australia. When you wrote CA, another reply took it as Canada, but I thought California. There are Rochesters in both locations and the Canadian one seems to have had a good lumber industry. The current Junior A level hockey team is called the Pembroke Lumber Kings!
I don't think I gave you the only bits of documentation I have on my Doherty-Calla(g)hans, so I'm going to send you a message with that. Our paths keep crossing here on ancestry; I have to think there's a link somewhere!
Thank you for your reply.
Meg

Sorry I don't think I can help with your search, but found it quite interesting because I have a Dougherty(William) who went to CA, and did very well in the lumber business, and became known as "Lumber King". He had two brothers, 1 was James who followed him into the lumber business, and took over I think completely after William Died.
William married Elizabeth Jane O'Connor who was the daugher of James and Mary(Kell)O'Connor. Jane and all her sibblings were born in Quebec.

I believe mty William Dougherty was also from Donegal, where most of my Irish family including my moms parents, were from.

I also have several Mary Doherty's in my family going back to the early 1800's. Most as far as I know from CoDonegal or nearby.

Good Luck!
Barbara

Hi,
In your history of your Dohertys in Australia, have you any reference to a Doherty being referred to as "The King of Rochester?"
My g-g-grandmother was Mary Doherty who married James Callahan and had 3 daughters in Donegal between 1868 and his death in 1873. From the youngest daughter's children, my aunt heard years ago (early 1980s) about a Doherty who had gone to Australia many years before that who had done so well in (lumber?) business that he was written up in a newspaper as the "King." The family, still in Ireland, had kept the clipping. The "King's" daughter (or some other female Doherty) was said to be a writer. Mary Doherty Callahan died in 1883, so I think the "King" must have sent the clipping before that.
Not much to go on here, I know, but thank you for checking!

I'm was born and raised in Woburn. I believe Daniel and Mary Doherty by the 1930s had a dairy farm in East Woburn and milk business; earlier they lived in Winchester where Daniel was a currier in the Beggs & Cobb tannery. Both parents, Daniel and Mary, came from Clonmany Parish in Co. Donegal. Daniel was from Ballymacmurty, Ballyliffin Townland, in Clonmany, and Mary was from a place called Puttle, Letter Townland, in Clonmany. Daniel had 10 siblings and Mary had 9 siblings according to my data. Daniel's brothers John and Michael were in Winchester, as were Mary's brother James and sister Bridget (aka Delia).

Their daughter Ann married Fred "Steamer" Reil from Woburn, a distant cousin of mine. They moved to NH and Fred passed away about 7 years ago. Not sure if Ann is still alive; she would be about age 100. I have more info on these Dohertys if you would like to contact me.

Mike Doherty
madoherty2(at)aol.com

Okay, do you know who their children may have been and when they were born, grandchildren etc. I'm asking because I knew a classmate in hs that married a Doherty whose family came from Woburn I think. She didn't graduate, but would have in 1959. She quite around 1957 to get married. and last I heard is living in NH. Shes a widow now.

barb

Hi Barbara,

Daniel and Mary were were born around 1880 and 1883. They were also in Massachusetts around Winchester and Wouburn I believe. That is all I know. I am trying to trace them back so I only know from them forward.

Please if you can tell us where in Ireland Daniel and Mary were from, their parents name(if known) and their dob. When they came to US, and where they settled.

With a name like Doherty, the more details the better.
I alone have 4 Doherty families in my family. Most were from Co Donegal, and one from Co Cork.

Mine settled in MA in around Boston.

Good Luck

Barbara

Daniel and Mary Doherty?

I am looking for any information on Daniel and Mary Doherty. They were married and came to the US from Ireland. I know of one son Philip Doherty (My great Grandfather) who married Josephine Flowers. Other possible children of Daniel and Mary are: John, Daniel, Annie, Hugh, and James. Any and all information is much appreciated!

Martin,

The Griffith's Valuation of 1855 contains the information on Mary Doherty, which represents the only Doherty identified in Kilmaley Parish. However there are a large number of Doherty's identified in the neighboring parishes of Drumcliff and Clondegad.

Good Luck!

John

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?a...
