I am trying to trace any decendants of Leonard (b1880) and Maud(b1882) Bayliss nee Norwood. They emmigrated to Canada from England in 1906 with two children. Gladys Alexandra Maud and Maud Louisa. A third girl Rosetta Florence was born in Canada in 1907 and is believed to have married Leo McDonald McGeein (?spelling). Leonard joined the Canadian Army in 1915. Leonard and Maud are both buried in Elmdale Memorial Park Cemetery, St Thomas, Ontario - Leonard was 68 and Maud was 102. Could any reletives please contact me with their email for direct contact.

Hi, I'm not related but looked up a few items on your family.

Attestation paper for Leonard Bayliss. You can see, copy and save the image:

The Elgin County Branch of the OGS is a GREAT site. A search for Bayliss came back with many hits (make sure you go to the "next 10" at bottom right). It shows a marriage for Maud Louisa.

22 January 1929 - Married - Edward William Osborn, son of A. Osborn to Maud Louisa Bayliss, daughter of L. Bayliss

This describes the cemetery where Leonard and Maud are buried:

I can't find the family in the 1911 Census which is somewhat of a mystery.....the surname must be spelled weird.

OK, I may be NUTS, but could this be your family in the 1911 Census? It takes a lot of imagination, the dates aren't quite right and we are missing a child (Gladys Alexandra Maud). I wasn't able to see the PDF of the original on my computer. If you can see it (click on 30 at the top of the page, then click on page 6) it would really help. Library and Archives Canada says the majority of images are light and/or smudged.

Also do you know the months of birth?

I can't thank you enough for the information that you have given me. I have been able to fill in more of Leonard's details now that I couldn't have done without your help. I don't think the Day entry in the 1911 census could be mine although the names are similar except for Howard. I also couldm't find them on the 1911 census, that's one reason that I had to ask for help. I believe that Alexandra Maud Louise died when still a child. Again thanks.

Hi again,

I got a look at the PDF of the original census (enlarge and see #73 near the bottom)

http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1911/pdf/e001984298.pdf

and I think it could be Bayliss. It is badly smudged and hard to read. Howard could be Leonard. Marie could be Maude. The address looks like 57 Mondamin. It also says the first 3 members of the family immigrated in 1906 from England.

I also found this obituary:

http://www.elginogs.ca/cemeteries/stthomas/southpark.htm

GROVES - St. Thomas Times Journal, 31 March 1924, Page 1 – Died – Mrs Julia Harriet GROVES, nee NORTHWOOD, 52 years, Mar 29, wife of Thomas GROVES; mother of Mrs Arthur TAYLOR, Miss Maud, Miss Violet, George, Alfred, Thomas, Leonard, John, Bert and Henry GROVES; sister of Mrs Leonard BAYLISS. Funeral from the residence of her sister, 23 Marian St. April 1 1924 to St Thomas Cemetery. No monument found - Submitted by David M. Cooper - 2 Nov 2003

Thank you very much for sending the notice of Elsie's death. It also gives me more information about her siblings. As the address is given for the church and funeral directors concerned I will write asking for an address to write to and maybe at last I can establish a direct contact. I can't thank everyone concerned enough for all the help I have received and although it has taken a few years I feel that at last I have got somewhere.
Thank you again,
Pat Palmer

Hello again,
It's a long time ago but I have been busy on some of my other names and at the time I also thought you may be 'nuts'. I have just revisited your messages and I have been able to read the pdf file of the 1911 census. It is Bayliss but the 'B' is not divided very well and the 'liss' is smudged so it is understandable that the copier thought it was Day. The writing is carelessly written but it is definately Leonard and Maude. Apparently Leonard and Maude had five children, the second died at the age of five, and another kind researcher has just sent me the death announcement of a daughter Elsie in August last year. Thank you very much for the trouble you have taken, especially as Bayliss is not of your family.

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for letting me know I wasn't nuts....the names are so unusual I felt it had to be them. I posted the obit for Elsie as well, and I hope you will be able to make some contact with the family.
